Hiya. Thanks for the reply. I found the issue - google cloud had a separate firewall which supersedes the firewall on the Debian instance. You have to go into VPC / firewall rules, and open the ports there plus setup the firewall on the instance. Duh :). Easy once figured out. Thanks again...
