Need of the SBC in terms of load?

I’m fairly new to FusionPBX and wanted to understand the real need for having an SBC in front of it, apart from security reasons. It’s a bit confusing because I’ve read in some places that FusionPBX alone can handle thousands of calls without any issues, while others say an SBC is required to manage high call volumes. So if we plan to register around 1,000 extensions, can FusionPBX handle that on its own, or would it eventually break?
Also if already do, what will be the system requirements to handle 1,000 extensions with about 10-15 domains

It will easily handle 1000 extensions with just a very modestly specced server.

Its all about calls per second really that stresses it.

A callcenter with 1000 extensions will process a lot more calls than a regular small business.

SBCs are OK but don't bring much to the table and create their own set of problems too.

Many VoIP deployments run perfectly fine without a Session Border Controller (SBC). An SBC becomes valuable once you’re handling significant call volume, but it’s not something you need right away. Having around 1,000 endpoints isn’t much—unless it’s a call center, as DigitalDaz mentioned. With proper server and endpoint configuration, you shouldn’t encounter NAT issues. I’ve seen systems handling 2,000–3,000 endpoints without problems, though performance ultimately depends on other factors—like call recordings, paging, and BLF buttons—which can place more load on the server than the calls themselves.
