Transfers to external numbers

I'm pulling my hair out over this one, however I cant see why it doesnt work - has to be something simple.

Incoming call to an extension, Want to transfer (either by using *1 or *4 - Blind or attended) to an external number.

Internal transfers are no problem. When i try to transfer to an external number i get about 3 or 4 digits in and the call drops...

Someone please put me out of my mysery!

A bit of information is often helpful when asking for assistance.

Are you on FusionPBX? What version of FusionPBX. Are you using analog telephones? If using IP phones, can you use the transfer function button without the * codes? Why are you using * codes instead of the transfer button? What kind of phone are you using? Is the bind_digit_action enabled in your dial plan?
